Zakat – Muslim Foundation of India

Zakat is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and an obligatory form of charity prescribed by Allah for every eligible Muslim. It requires those who possess wealth above a minimum threshold (Nisab) to donate a fixed portion annually. The word “Zakat” means purification and growth — giving Zakat purifies one’s wealth and nurtures compassion within the community.

The Qur’an repeatedly emphasizes the importance of Zakat, placing it alongside prayer:

“And establish prayer and give Zakat.” (Qur’an 2:110)

“Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase.” (Qur’an 9:103)

“And in their wealth is a known right for the needy and the deprived.” (Qur’an 51:19)

Why Zakat Matters

Zakat is more than a charitable act — it is a social welfare system designed to ensure that wealth circulates fairly. Its benefits include:

  • Supporting those in financial hardship

  • Reducing poverty and inequality

  • Strengthening social bonds between different segments of society

  • Encouraging responsibility, empathy, and gratitude

By giving Zakat, Muslims fulfill a spiritual obligation while contributing to the well-being and dignity of others.

How Zakat is Used

Our Approach: From Zakat Takers to Zakat Givers

At the Muslim Foundation of India, we believe that the true spirit of Zakat goes beyond temporary relief. While providing assistance is essential, our greater mission is to help individuals build sustainable livelihoods so they can become self-reliant and empowered.

Instead of offering short-term aid year after year, we focus on transforming lives by helping beneficiaries establish small businesses such as:

  • Kirana (grocery) shops

  • Mobile food carts

  • Vegetable and fruit stalls

  • Tailoring units

  • Small service-based enterprises etc.

By supporting people in starting income-generating activities, we aim to break the cycle of dependency and ensure that today’s Zakat recipients become tomorrow’s Zakat contributors.

This approach fulfills the higher purpose of Zakat — uplifting individuals with dignity, enabling them to stand on their own feet, and strengthening the economic fabric of the entire community.
